Religion:

the basics
"There probably isn’t a God, so relax, laugh and enjoy life!"

This saying appeared on buses and houses in England and Spain a few years ago. Painted by a free thinker it really hits the nail on the head..

The book and film The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco describes very clearly on which basis religions are founded – namely the spreading of fear and threat, the exercise of power and the hoarding of wealth in the cloisters of the believers. The horror of being a non- believer in the middle ages is an important theme: the Catholic Inquisition.

Central, however, is the library of a Benedictine Cloister, housed in a tower. The books were ordered according to importance – the higher the floor, the more important the work. The most important were at the very top, admittance was forbidden and it was guarded by an old, blind abbot. Whoever was to read one of these books, was killed by him.

What kind of works were these, that were so dangerous noone was allowed to read them? It was humorous works, books that made people laugh! In the book it is more of a horror story – Eco wanted to point out what it was about: take joy away from humanity, livliness, so that they would be unhappy and sell them a substitute for it. Laughing people are happy and therefore no good to religion!
I was brought up in a strict catholic household and in my life taken part in hundreds of masses – what I never experienced were laughing people. What I have seen is a lot of sadness and pseudo-holiness under the motto: the humbler and the more wretched the better..

The world of religion is really a suffering- filled twilight zone.
Therefore they cause more suffering more misery so that they can continue to exist. All this in the name of God in a covering of nice words. The man of today is the fruit of the seed, sown thousands of years ago and nourished by the environment. The fruit is bitter, conflict-laden and full of hate.

Religion has divided and poisened our world. There are millions of houses of worshhip on this planet so humanity should actually be happy and satisfied. However, I am sure, as long as a single mosque, a single synagogue, a church, or a small temple still exists there will never be peace.

I don’t know any religion that is life-affirming, in fact, death is the ultimate focus. All religions are focused on what happens when we die – with heaven, with salvation, Nirvana. They promise paradise if you follow the path they show.
The trick is that they never need to prove the truth of their thesis, because noone has ever come back from the other side. What an ingenious move!

True religion doesn’t deny life, it is a staircase on which one can climb deeply into life. True religion doesn’t turn away from life, it opens the eyes wide to life, it is another name for experiencing life to the fullest. It is a total, boundless, open meeting with life.
Viewed in this way tantra is very religious without religion – without temples, priests, middlemen or soul sellers.
